Dear Art Maker,
You are an artist already, just as you are. The potential to create lives in you. You are not restricted by your perceived skill or ability, you are not tied to an outcome or product. I started Work it ART as a wellness endeavor. A way to process emotions, experiences, and situations. A space to come to when you need to work something out, let something go, or see something from a new perspective. A place for when you need to ignite or reignite your creativity, or simply want to get an idea.
I am not a therapist and this site is not a substitute for the care of a professional. But I am a long time arts educator and have always contemplated the function of art for my students, for myself, and for the world. I always come back to how it connects my heart and my mind – emotions with expression.
In the beginning of my journey in parenthood the time for my own art dwindled. I craved inspiration and release. I started to realize that my art didn’t have to be connected with a product to be able to serve me (and others). My art could be the medium through which I search, process, explore and discover. It could be the way I connect and communicate with myself.
As you read through the prompts select one that speaks to you. Create an artwork that responds to the prompt. Let your art happen organically. Use any materials and processes that come to mind and make it as simple or complex, as realistic or abstract, as you desire. This is not about being a “good artist”, and this does not need to be about a finished product. Feel your feelings, make YOUR art.
I hope that you will find comfort, creativity, community, or maybe something unexpected while you Work it ART to work it out.
With Love,
B
